5 Tips for First Time Travel Nurses

Are you embarking on your first travel nurse journey?! Taking on a new assignment can be nerve racking IN GENERAL, so embarking on your first travel assignment can come with a lot of emotions. Don’t worry, HSP has you covered with 5 helpful tips that will make your first travel assignment a breeze. 

#1 Research, Research, Research!

Research the area you’re going to be working in! Having an understanding of your new environment can help with your adjustment to new cultures, languages and the population you will be working with.  Getting to know the public transportation system, local attractions, restaurants, and other amenities can also aid in settling in along with making the most of your travel assignment. After all, that is one of the biggest perks of travel nursing – Adventure!

#2 Read the Contract

Make sure you understand the paperwork associated with your travel assignment, ASK THE QUESTIONS!  Read through the contracts and legal documents and make sure you are comfortable with the terms of your contract. 

#3 Make the Connections 

When you start your new assignment, get to know your coworkers and other travel nurses in the area! They will give you a sense of community and provide valuable insight into the hospital and area! 

#4 Prepare 

Make sure you have the right equipment and supplies before you start your assignment. How can you prepare? Take time to research hospital protocols, policies and systems they use.  Find out what resources the hospital has to offer that can make your job easier!

#5 Stay Organized

Keep track of your assignments, deadlines, and tasks so you don’t miss anything important. Take advantage of any perks the hospital offers, understand any and all the benefits that come with your contract and most of all Have fun!
