#1 Pack Smart
Be sure to pack only what you need. You want to pack light and only the necessities because you will be only on assignment for about 13 weeks. Think about whether you need the items or if you can do without them for those 13 weeks. You probably won’t need all 30 pairs of your shoes. Bring items that are versatile, like a laptop that can double as a television where you can watch your shows. Also, remember there are items you can buy when you arrive at your new location, like food items and containers. Leave all the unnecessary weight and luggage behind.
#2 Make Friends at Work
A new job, new coworkers and a new home…we know it may be intimidating, but it is important to start off your assignment being cordial and helpful to make friends. Plan fun outings with your new coworkers after your shifts to get to know them. You most likely won’t get along with all your coworkers, but it is a good idea to maintain positive relations and respect towards everyone. It will make your assignment a lot more fun making new friends!
#3 Be Professional
Nursing is without a doubt a high stress job, especially since you are dealing with others’ health. When work becomes hectic and problems arise, do not take things personally. It is essential to always maintain your composure under stress and even if there is an issue. If it is a more serious problem be sure to speak with your supervisor and recruiter. This brings us to tip #4.
#4 Stay Connected With your Recruiter
Your recruiter will be with you throughout your entire assignment. Especially with HSP, your recruiter is your go to person for any questions that you may have regarding payroll, attendance, concerns etc. If there is something specific that you want to get out of your assignment, talk to your recruiter! It may also be a good idea to keep them up to date with anything important that happens throughout your assignment. Our recruiters are here for YOU.
5. Plan Your Free Time
Travel Nursing is an exciting and adventurous career path! It is important to make the most out of the short time you have in your new home. It is beneficial to learn about the location before moving in, so you have an idea on what fun activities there are in your area. Once you know a little bit about the area, plan your free time. On your days off, are you going to go to the beach, eat at a popular local restaurant everyone online raves about or maybe visit a historical landmark? Whether you have detailed plans on your days off or if you just plan on relaxing and hanging out, the most important thing to do when on assignment…is HAVE FUN!
